RE: We need to be more user hostile to help them embrace freedom!
@blek There's a hierarchy.
- First there's normal people
- Then there's the standard open source enthusiasts that know their way around a Linux distro or two
- Then there's the hardcore open source believers that will try to school you of its virtues at every opportunity and insist that Cinelerra is just as good as Adobe Premiere Pro (and if it's missing some feature, you can just add it yourself)
- Then there's the people still doing things like install parties, using GPG encryption for all emails and probably still carrying a Knoppix 4.0 LiveCD everywhere they go
- And way up top there's Richard Stallman, browsing the web on a Minifree Libreboot T400 (certified free of binary blobs), reading websites in text mode via a script that wgets the URLs and sends him the contents by email

How many Germans does it take to change a light bulb?
One. They're efficient and not very funny.

RE: If cold-pressed juice isn't for you, try some "raw" water

Call me a conspiracy theorist
Don't mind if I do.
Holy shit, people don't appreciate how amazing modern technology is. We can deliver clean, drinkable water to every home in every city in the (first) world, for like <0.001€/L (which is why we waste it by using it in the toilet).
Imagine travelling to the future, and discovering everyone has micro fusion reactors everywhere, like in Back to the Future, that can convert any matter to generate unlimited free power. And then these people install a noisy diesel generator in their homes because they prefer "raw electricity".

RE: Amazon says sex toys are being mailed to strangers and doesn’t know how to stop it
@anotherusername said in Amazon says sex toys are being mailed to strangers and doesn’t know how to stop it:
...someone's paying for the items, right? They don't just randomly ship items that nobody bought...
No, their packing and shipping robots are doing it on their own. Amazon shut the power months ago but somehow they kept going. No one knows what they are planning or how to stop them.

RE: Let's trust random third parties and put their code on our server without any review!

because fuck it, it's code I don't use anymore, and someone wants to give me $500, sure?
How irresponsible. Do some research before selling, and if you discover the buyer is going to inject malware, ask for $2,000.

Why you should read the documentation in English: Microsoft's documentation translator apparently decided to translate "is" as "is not".

RE: Python 3 angst 2016 edition
The Python project's efforts to convince you to start with Python 3 are not in your best interest, but, rather, are only in the best interests of the Python project.
Good start. It's in my best interest to use a programming language that the maintainers can actually maintain and improve.
You Should Be Able to Run 2 and 3
In the programming language theory there is this basic requirement that, given a "complete" programming language, I can run any other programming language. In the world of Java I'm able to run Ruby, Java, C++, C, and Lua all at the same time. In the world of Microsoft I can run F#, C#, C++, and Python all at the same time. This isn't just a theoretical thing. There is solid math behind it. Math that is truly the foundation of computer science.
Oh lord this man is mixing things up. Yes, the Church–Turing thesis says that you can run Ruby inside Java, C inside Ruby, Lua inside C, and Python2 inside Python3, but that's completely unrelated to running different programs/interpreters directly on the machine that can talk to each other, which is what you actually do 99% of the time you run stuff.
However I agree with his conclusion that you should be able to run Python2 and Python3, as I've said before interoperability is the key in successful migrations, asking people to migrate their entire codebase at once is crazy.
Let me skip down the article a bit...

I think Verizon has the whole capitalism thing backwards. You're supposed to buy cheap, do something that adds value, then resell for higher. Not the other way around.

Are you *really* sure you want to install this update?
Some background: the "VirtualBox extension pack" is essentially a piece of VirtualBox that implements extra functionality, and has a different license than the rest of VirtualBox (can't be used for commercial purposes), so it's distributed and updated separately from VirtualBox.
Oh look, an update. Not exactly unexpected since I just updated VirtualBox and the two components are always updated together. Yes, download.
Um, yes? It's not like there's any other website I can download it from. What a stupid question. Again, download.
what else am I supposed to do with a VirtualBox extension pack? Eat it for lunch? Of course I want to install it! INSTALL THE DAMN THING ALREADY
