Christmas Horror

  • OK, let's see who can come up with the best creepy entry on the subject of "The Presence Under The Christmas Tree."

    I'll open:

It sees you when you're sleeping.
    It's gone when you're awake.
But you feel that something's watching you,
and its gaze is hard to shake.

Reminds me of a phrase from Hogfather

the Hogfather is a winter myth figure who, on Hogswatchnight, gallops from house to house on a crude sledge drawn by four tusked wild boars to deliver presents of sausages, black puddings, pork scratchings, and ham to all children who have been good. He says ‘Ho ho ho’ a lot. Children who have been bad get a bag full of bloody bones (it’s these little details which tell you it’s a tale for the little folk). There’s a song about him. It begins: You'd Better Watch Out.

    I'm dreaming, in R'lyeh, Christmas
Far past the Gates that you can know
Weirs of bones, glisten, and spilled blood, thickens
As you scream and gibber in the snowin the snow

Folks dressed up like firemen trying to douse
Making this season bright but dire

  • When little Jenny woke up, the sun had not quite risen. It was Christmas morning, but her parents would loudly disagree if she tried to wake them now. So she crept down the hall, in her pajamas and softest slippers to avoid making a sound. Mostly she was successful, and she was successful enough that soon she could see the garish lights of their tree through the night.

The stockings were full to bursting, and the modest collection of gifts beneath the tree had multiplied! Santa had come, though she had begun to suspect it had just been her parents' being sneaky while she slept. Not that it really mattered.

She paused to pick the crumbs off the plate that once held cookies--including most of a chocolate chip, score!--before she made her way to the tree. It was dark, but the tree's ensemble of lights provided plenty of visibility to see the many colorfully wrapped boxes and awkwardly shaped lumps, festooned with ribbons and tags. But at their heart, directly and perfectly at the center of the tree, there was one that caught her eye far moreso than the others.

It was larger, yes, but it was far more than just that. The green paper was a bit more vibrant, the red ribbon a touch more bold, the edges and seams just a little more perfect. It seemed to call to her and she was drawn straight toward it.

Little Jenny was an energetic and eager child, but not a terribly observant one. She quickly moved for the gift and never quite consciously noticed some of the odder things about. Like the fact that no other present was touching this particular package. Nor the discarded red sack that laid nearby. Nor the distinctly strange and somewhat sooty boot prints on the floor, that come from one way but do not return. She even failed to notice its conspicuous lack of a tag stating who it was meant for.

Tragically, little Jenny forgot the first rule of living with adventurer parents: Always be wary and expect mimics.

@error, you have an implementation bug, you use the same style for command tokens as the language does for its tokens.
