"The tools used by Aéroports de Paris controllers run on four different operating systems, that are all between 10 and 20 years old,"
Man, I was never afraid of flying, but now I'm terrified of flying to France specifically.
"The issue with a system that old is that people don't like to do maintenance work," explained Fiacre. "Furthermore, we are starting to lose the expertise [to deal] with that type of operating system. In Paris, we have only three specialists who can deal with DECOR-related issues," said Fiacre. "One of them is retiring next year, and we haven't found anyone to replace him," he added.
I think I've read a couple stories on the front page about this exact thing.

@groo I'm sure there's at least one multinational bank that relies on MS-DOS for critical operations...hell, there's probably some ancient *nix thrown in there as well
there's a reason why COBOL devs make boatloads of money
-
It's only very recently that the US FAA replaced its 40 year old Air Traffic Control system.
-
@boomzilla to be fair, an ATC system seems like the type of thing you'd want to avoid replacing until it's absolutely required..I mean, not like any flights really need to be webscale
-
@bb36e Sure. But...40 years? Hardware dies and goes beyond obsolete over shorter time frames.

@groo This is news... from November 2015. Your clock might be out of date.

@Tsaukpaetra It's not likely it changed much in the last year

Maybe they upgraded to Windows 3.11 for Workgroups

Quite a few years ago I watched a documentary type program. I don't remember what it was about but at one point the presented started ranting on about the inefficiencies of the French telephone system. To prove his point, whilst in a third or fourth floor apartment, he dialed the number of the apartment at the same level across the road. He then casually walked to that apartment and waited to answer the phone.
-
@loose ... as his confederate secretly dialled the number from another phone?
-
@bb36e If it's running COBOL, then the hardware is probably quite up-to-date!

Just last month, IIRC. I booted it up to show Microsoft Bob to someone.

95 is over 20 years old. 3.1 must be closer to 25

not really.......
-
(undefined = function undefined() { alert(arguments.callee.name + ' is not a ' + typeof arguments.callee); })();
(It doesn't really define, though...
undefined
is frozen. And in strict mode, it'll throw an error.)
-
Oh hey, this works even in strict mode:
(()=>{ 'use strict'; (function undefined() { alert(undefined.name + ' is not a ' + typeof undefined); })(); })();
But then, you can redefine
undefined
in any new context -- it's not a reserved word. Justwindow.undefined
is frozen.

Maybe but they sure as hell didn't install FF 22

It's actually funny to think that, given how old '95 is, the age gap between 3.1 and 95 is so small.
Yet the technological leap between the two of them is HUGE.

If you CBA[1] to switch off your ancient system, and you can't find someone to learn it, then raise your fucking pay offer until you do find someone.
[1] maybe there's good reasons. I'm not addressing that in this post.

No, apparently I hit the quote button a few times, nothing happened, so I refreshed the page, hit quote again, and since the composer was small I didn't realize it remembered me clicking quote all those times.
The truth is rather boring....

Yeah... they should really put in some coding that stops you from clicking quote (with no selection, because natch you might want to quote multiple parts of the post separately) multiple times....

Give that the bug only occurs when NodeBB's javascript front-end is fucking up-- something tells me they won't be able to made code to fix the code...

What bug, the one where clicking quote twice makes two quotes?
I'm pretty sure that doesn't only happen during server cooties. I just tried it...

That's deliberate, so you can get quoting right in a complex mention…
The double-post on Submit is cootie-related.

Not so when you realize the truth that @Lorne-Kates really does have a ton of dead hookers dissolving in HDPE drums in his basement.
