I was browsing some of my old wtf pictures and I came across this one:
This is dutch, translated it says:
Offline (doh)
Not online
WTF?

I don't think that this is really a WTF, although It probably could have been worded better. Offline would be referring to contacts who are actually marked 'offline' while not online would be referring to contacts who may be signed in but their status not set to 'online'.

You can be neither offline nor not online.
Meaning, you're Away, Occupied, N/A, Out For Coffee, etc. Which is all the same "DND" theoretically, but IM clients insist that you need all of them for any give situation. :\
