I'm too smart to read job ads that I apply for
-
We put a CAPTCHA of sorts in our job ads. For example, in Developer Relations and Community Manager, we say:
To demonstrate that you’ve actually read the job postings that you apply for, please indicate that you've read this sentence by telling us the answer to ten minus three in your cover letter.
It's an easy detail to miss, and when applicants do miss it, we reply with this response:
Thank you for your interest in Inedo; being detail-oriented is an important quality for this role. Because you missed a key detail in the job post, should we still consider your application... and if so, why?
Most people don't respond, and the ones that do will give a fairly decent backpedal for how they missed it. Oooh man, not this guy.
To be honest, given my background, my skills, and experience, it's simply not worth my time to read every job ad I come across. Now that you've gotten me to look at yours, I see you have some sort of "test" in there. Three. Done.
I think it's obvious from my resume why you should consider my application, but why should I consider bringing my talents to Inedo? I'm smart, ambitious, and can take your products further than you imagined possible -- are you ready for someone like that?
Brillant!

on one hand, edless source of future WTFs
on the other hand we do like our WTFs at arms length, of not farther.
on the gripping hand..... man with that attitude i'm not surprised that they havent been soundly slapped in the face, possibly on a daily basis.

Or they have, hence why they're looking for a new position.

So you're saying my compulsive obsession with reading everything I reply to a minimum of 6 times to make sure I didn't miss any detail that will expose me as a fraud can pay off?
-
7so, I feel like I might miss this rather easily the first time, because most of the job listings I get are dumb things sent by recruiters whose grasp of the language is tentative at best.
But I think I'd get it the second time at the very least...
-
Well, he did read the job posting in the end. The posting doesn't list mastery of basic arithmetic as a requirement, though; clearly if you want a correct answer, you should put that in there.
-
Well, OK then...
I guess that guy is one of those "I'm smarter than you" people. I hate those kind of people, as they usually are rather... unintelligent.
As a certain T-Shirt put it, "Those who think they know everything annoy those of us who actually do"

He doesn't even know basic arithmetic after all.

Wow, vague hand-wavy sales jargon from an unproven nobody. You're so hired, bro. Just don't have him/her do any math.

I've had applicants like that. We don't have a CAPTCHA but we do have instructions for our applicants. You know, simple stuff: Provide a cover letter detailing why you think you're a good fit and send a resume. If it's a graphic position, we also ask for a portfolio. The people who don't even do that bare minimum don't even get a response, but we did have one person who was offended that we dare request that they give us a few sentences as to why they're a good fit. As if the guy was a household name or something. It was a few years ago and I don't think I have it, but it was cringey.
-
@the_quiet_one There was a story on this site a year (or two?) ago from a guy who had made a few commits on the mongodb (?) repo on Github who was offended that nobody was throwing money and praise at him just for completing a job application. He finished his blog post with some "helpful" tips for prospective employers to consider. The most important thing, apparently, is that you have to have heard of him.
Sooo cringe worthy.

@apapadimoulis is slowly learning that job interviews are an endless source of WTF-ery.

Reminds me of a story I read
yearsdecades ago. A tech writer was putting together a glossary for a large company (possibly a large blue one that dominated the industry at the time), and included in the middle of it:Martini - a drink which I will buy anyone who has read this far
In the story he said "I put this in 5+ years ago, and I have yet to have anyone ask me to buy them a martini."

@robfreundlich
Glossary
may supportIEnumerable
, but it's not intended to be iterated over!

but why should I consider bringing my talents to Inedo?
@apapadimoulis What you mean you don't like a dom/sub relationship with your employees?
Don't you sign some kind of contract as well?

@thecpuwizard Or a translator...
If said company does not have a strict no-easter-eggs policy, they may just leave it be.

Obviously, the answer is yes, or the writer @RobFreundlich mentioned wouldn't be so disappointed!
