A new StackExchange site

You know how workplace.stackexchange.com is full of "how do I say hello to a co worker" type questions? Well now there's a whole site for people with no social skills to ask other people with no social skills how to socialise.
-
... How did this pass whatever they have at Stack Exchange?
-
Universal answer:
Don't bother asking this stuff online. API for the Human service is highly inconsistent, not only between versions, but between individual deployments.
Basically poke at the endpoints until you either get a satisfiable result, or you get banned. In case of a ban, don't despair and try another instance, there's close to 7.5 × 109 of them running at this time.
Closed for being too non-specific.

Yeah, about that...

That looks more like it needs salad cream or mayo.

Point of order: query them using sound protocols, not physical interaction. Attaching untrustworthy peripherals to your system can result in viruses or total system shutdown.

Right, sorry, I assumed proper security practices on the side of the client. Grave mistake.
-
@onyx Nonsense. The universal answer to any of the questions I see on the site right now is "grunt loudly and pee yourself while maintaining eye contact the entire time". Works for the side shuffle, someone bringing a baby to work, stopping your coworker reading things out loud, dealing with attention-seekers while you talk to someone else... it's literally perfect. Prove me wrong.
-
@blek that would work particularly well for the vegan one
-
@jaloopa Yeah, or "How to approach a strategy game against a 5-10 year old child you don't know"
-
Also, TIL there's a parenting site on SE as well. Humanity is doomed.
-
@blek said in A new StackExchange site:

Zerg rush, obviously. Duh.
-
@jaloopa That one's great.
I mean most StackOverflow sites, the answer 90% of the time is "JUST TALK TO THE PERSON AND ASK!" but on that one you know that'll be the answer 100% of the time.
Or like I like to phrase it, to questions like, "will my boss mind if I take off at 2:00 PM today?": "There is literally one person on the planet who can answer this question and instead of asking that person you've asked thousands of random people to tell you to ask that person."
(Especially academics, BTW. It's full of crazy questions like, "should I address my professor by his first name if he uses his first name in his email signature?" And it's like the thought of just asking never occurred. Aren't you supposed to be an academic? Isn't "curiosity" kind of a thing in that profession?)
-
@blakeyrat said in A new StackExchange site:

Even being directly told by the person isn't always enough for some of the questioners. I saw one (either academics or workplace I think) that was "Someone has told me to call them by their first name. Is it rude to keep calling them Mr Whatever?" Yes. He's explicitly told you what to call him, you moron
-
@jaloopa My parents have trouble with that one too, especially when it comes to some trans people our family interacts with. The rule on names is easy:
- People's names are exactly what they tell you they are. (Any issues you have with the name not matching their apparent gender or race or whatever is your own hang-up, not anybody else's.)
- If you're not sure what a person wants to be called, ask them.

SE's chess site is actually pretty good, but not very active.

I, for one, am readying my popcorn for the Picking Up Women SE.
EDIT: oh wait, maybe I won't need it.
-
@maciejasjmj How are other people supposed to answer how HE reacts? "You puke on your shoes, then slip on the puke and crack open your skull. QED."
-
@jaloopa You sound like a liberal. It doesn't matter what he asked you to call him. He has a role to play, and it's your job to make sure he doesn't deviate from it.

Hi, I'm Maciej, but you can call me Mr. Huge Wang Fantastico.
-

There's also a hefty dose of "figure it out for yourself", which can go wrong in ways like this (trying too hard to figure it out without asking your superior, or even local colleagues, directly).
-

Fucking lol. SO is the last place I would go to learn about social skills. This is the same site which prides itself on being needlessly pedantic about what kinds of questions are acceptable.. why do they think this will work?

Oh come on, it's easy! It's like Macy Gray, but with "Gray" replaced by "Jay", and less raspiness.

Damn, that was apparently so impressive, 32 lurkers came out of the woodwork to upvote it!

@antiquarian Yeah, I'm sure that if you look past the moderation practices, SE can be a great place to find info on or discuss technology or... anything logical, really. The place is full of of the kind of people you want to ask about chess. Half the site seems to have some kind of autism spectrum disorder, and I think the moderation practices are so horrible because the most severe autists spend the most time there, which gives them the most pull and they get promoted to moderators.
So chess, Star Trek lore, biotechnology or database design are fine, but relationships or parenting? Absolutely not.

I used to work with a Maciej, but he went by "Magic." It's sufficiently similar to the actual name, which I never heard anyone pronounce, that I can't help but read Maciej that way.

Yet one more reason gamification is fucking terrible.

That's like referring to Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss as "that weird 2001: A Space Odyssey music". Get some culture.

I'm more fond of that tune from Bela Lugosi's Dracula.

No, it's the theme tune from Hogs of War
-
@jaloopa Remember when Futurama wrote that beautiful piece of piano music for its final episode? It's impossible they used music from a well-known composer.
It was good, but not as good as the piece that sitcom Wings wrote to use as their theme.
I wonder if there's a classic music site out there somewhere I could troll by constantly referring to that piece as the "Wings" theme tune, no matter how often they correct me.

For some reason I've always assumed it was created for the show, thanks for the correction :)
