• Re: Quick, get the patent lawyers on the phone!

I have a lawyer friend. He normally gets automatically thanked and sent home when called for jury duty, because generally speaking, lawyers don't like laywers on their juries. One time, however, he got on the jury, because the entire case hinged on a highly technical point of law. Said the entire case, by both sides, was presented to ...
But if they know I have to pay if I lose, then they will be much more cautious in taking my case or not. And they'll be more likely to take the case on contingency if they know it has a good chance of succeeding, which at least spares me from paying my own lawyers because they will be paid by the ...
The cuurent situation sucks, but "Loser Pays" only works in a perfect world.
It isn't really a question of if it works, though. It's a question of if it works better than what we have now. Arguing that we shouldn't change anything that can 't be made perfect is arguing that ...
It's the same reason why I don't understand why, when it says: "A jury of your peers"
Note: The word "peer" does not appear anywhere in the US Constitution, nor any of its amendments. Most particularly in reference to juries.  Article III, Section 2, paragraph ...

  • Re: Why mathematicians are no fun at parties

I guess the producers weren't very imaginative. The proper response is to pick a word that isn't in the encyclopedia at all. No, it isn't before "mainfold." It also ins't after "manifold", but they won't ask that, they'll just assume it is. 100% guarantee that anyone who tries this kind of foolishness ...

  • Re: Why mathematicians are no fun at parties
That reminds me of a fun way of catching somebody who claims to never lie. Tell them if the first digit of their PIN is 0 to give no response. If they give a response, repeat for 1. In a maximum of 40 questions you can get their PIN. Or, more likely, they lie to you. Also works for "do you have something ...

  • Re: More Java installer crap

There is a registry setting (that I got from here, BTW) that eliminates the crapware installs for Java (there is not, so far as I can tell, one for Flash). Far more annoying is that since upate 51, they've changed the default security settings such that Oracle's own "verify Java" page on java.com doesn't work right any ...
