• Re: Secure FTP access
And even if it wasn't, you could sniff it off the wire. Or set up a local netcat listener and redirect the ftp server's name to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file.
THAT'S HACKING! You must be fired immediately. For reasons! Reasons, yes, reasons. Known to IT management.

  • Re: Why mathematicians are no fun at parties
I started conceiving of a system based on information theory that asked questions pertaining to linguistic construction of the word, the dissonance between connotative and denotative definitions, how abstract the word is, etc. But then I realized that this was the saddest thing I had ever done in my ...

  • Re: Why mathematicians are no fun at parties

You are not very inte-lligent, are you? Anyway, the method described for guessing letters is pointless. The one of the mathematicians was optimal, but even without a dictionary, there are better, information theory based ways. Indeed, assuming an 'r' when you have "INTE" is a sure bet, (558 in 635). But it won't make the ...

Why would you need an encylopedia? You can just do a binary search directly on the letters in the word.
This is how people end up getting a cocktail toothpick to the eye..
If you can't guess a word from the first 5 letters, ...

  • Re: KFC takes use-by dates so seriously

If there's any truth in the idea that the tokens in iconographic scripts symbolize the significant, then it means an armada of sail ships, on their way to the west to attack the eternal enemy.
Not enough swearing, but yeah, it's not bad.
Because there was no swearing in the 10 or so posts I copied. You should swear more.
I think the key is finding words that you prefer for expression.  I was on GlassDoor and a lot of people were bitching about my employer.  There ...

  • Re: Predictive text on Windows phone
I was recently thinking about WP text suggestions. I assumed it learned a bit about the most common words you use together...
The proof of that is actually not in producing a sentence that sounds like you, but rather in changing the predictions. So if it originally predicts "will", ...

  • Re: Assorted WTFs
I think the biggest WTF for me though is the name of the business. Viverae
It means everything! Vivere is Latin for to live, to be alive. Now, that doesn't look very Latin, does it? It looks like Italian. But that's not the language of doctors, so let's make it more Latin. Everyone knows all Latin ...
