    Linux in public

Okay, so this is one on the rare^w Linux-in-public-photos. I post this with the best regards to the Deutsche Telekom. Found this on the - actually, I don't know what the intended usage is - let's call it "adversiting-screen" of a phone booth (as it's advertised by the DT - normally it's called "Telefon-Stängel").

Your phones have advertisements? Like paid product placements? What the hell is the world coming to?

Oh, right. I mentioned the word "Linux". In the spirit of the Olympic Games: May the games begin!

Here in the UK, more and more of our ATMs are getting advertising too - not just for products offered by the bank that owns it (that's common), I've also seen "real" adverts on them too (ie for completely unrelated products)

Truly a wonder of the modern world...

TRWTF is public telephones.  Most public telephones in the US are being disposed of as quickly as the telcos can rip them out.  I've had my own cell phone for a long, long time.  Then again, I don't live in an impoverished European country.

And what do you do when you're mugged and they take your phone? Or the battery runs out? etc etc

I had a cell phone for 12 years but I still use public payphones every now and then. for example when my battery is drained. You rarely need them but when you need them they are very useful.

The good doctor is here to help. I promise this time I will not screw up the operation.

Oh, sorry, I don't live in a hellhole country where people are being mugged all the time and where citizens can't carry concealed firearms to fend off muggers.

    Or the battery runs out?

In the extremely rare case that this would happen, I suppose I would borrow a friend's cell or ask to use a courtesy phone.

What are you going to do when you get the HIV from putting a public telephone receiver against your face?

I'm sorry, I really tried to write an answer to your post, but I just couldn't handle that much stupidity in one post (erm, no, I meant yours).

Lament the fact that all the telephone sanitizers were sent away to another planet?

Those phones are like a condom: better to have one and not need it, than need one and not have it. Plus, I'd like to know if  $2.50/minute is something only poor people can't afford. Because that's the roaming rate in the US.

I don't have sex with diseased prostitutes so I don't ever need a condom.

You must have a sucky cell plan.  Still, $2.50 a minute isn't unaffordable.  It's not like you're going to be chatting with people for hours on end.

That's what US carriers charge to non-US carriers, some may have lower charges but the best I've seen is $2/minute, still high. In-country roaming, I understand, is either very cheap or nonexistant in the US. But I think the "expensive roaming" argument was about the international rates.

    "Telefon-Stängel"

    BAHAHA

    Sorry.

It's just that the Dutch word "stengel" refers to a long bendy plant stem, and when uttered is preferrably accompanied by a mental picture of one swaying elastically in the wind.

That's about the same as "Stängel" means in German too. I haven't heard of "Telefon-Stängel" before, though.

Public phones never work or they steal your change, and smell funny, so what's the point on having nonworking crap all around?
    Roaming prices?

Fuck it, you are either on vacation: so send them a postcard or find a coffee shop and send em an email.

Or you are on a business trip: so let the company pay the bills. If you are your own company and can't pay roaming, then you shouldn't be making business abroad in the first place.

Also, you can always use the hotel phone, unless of course you are backpacking in cheap eastern europe hostals, which makes you a stoned hippy who doesn't care about calling mommy or whoever.

Maybe just keep a couple of those public phones on airports and hospitals, for emergencies or something...

    BTW Linux sux!
