So I'm working on a project at work that was written in VB6 with third party libraries.  Specifically right now I'm looking at APEX True DBGrid Pro.  The problem is we can't find our licenses for these components and there is but a single machine that is capable of building our application.  I tried to take a VMWare image of the machine (using VMWare converter) but I get the error: "This control is not licensed to this machine."

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this?  I though the VM image would wor, but somehow it still knows it's not the same machine.

PS.  vb6 sucks.

Have you tried contacting the vendor and asking for a replacement?  I would imagine they have records of your original purchase somewhere in their records.  I know most of my third party control vendors have a portal that I go to that gives me access to what I've purchased.  And in these cases, I didn't go through them for the original purchase.

Other than that, they probably use some sort of license management scheme that utilizes hardware id's that *can* be duplicated in VMWare by hacking the registry.  Usually, this is more of a pain than it is worth.

Yeah, I called the vendors and they couldn't find any records from my company.  At this point I'm almost done removing the components and replacing them with my own code to accomplish the same thing (auto resizing controls, coloring grids, etc.).   I also tried hacking up the registry in VMWare but ended up just wasting a day on that.

PS. VB6 especially sucks on a 12 year old machine, whose anti-virus seems to be going crazy.  In the last 4 days (in which I've used it maybe 8 hours), the AV has read in 40,000,000,000 bytes of IO...  And I haven't even been moving files around or anything.

Why wouldn't you just turn the AV off?
Please do not tell us that you have a 12 year old machine that is connected to the internet or that cannot be easily ghosted and restored...

1.  only IT can control the anti-virus.  IT would never ever turn off the anti-virus.
2.  I have a 12 year old machine which is connected to the internet.
3.  I have backups of the machine, but I need another computer with sufficiently close hardware for the backup to work, which I don't have.

wow, that looks pretty good.  I might check that out later.  I currently have an MSHFlexGrid where i used to have the third party grid.  It has it's limitations, but perhaps I can work around them until I can move to .NET.

haha, thanks. I've already implemented it with MSHFlexGrid though ;)
