I suppose they are kinda related to IT. Or at least the T part. Maybe they know how good I am with my hands (I have programmers hands - all soft and girly).

Overworked, underpaid....sigh....anyone know of a tropical island with a decent Internet connection?

Is this in the UK ? The T part is dangerously close to Engineer, and everybody over here knows that engineers wear greasy overalls and wipe their hands on an oily rag !

Nope, the "R" part of the salary indicates otherwise. Rands it stands for in this case - Zuid Afrikaanse Rands.

IMHO, Faxes are as immortal as FORTRAN.

Keeping in the same vein, I earlier picked up a couple of pages from the fax machine. It was someone's CV, with a very generic cover letter. I didn't even know that we were hiring for the positions he was applying for. Or hiring at all. Oh, I phoned him to enquire why he decided he needed to send his 10 page CV 4 times. "Just in case you did not get it", he replied.

Ah, thanks - I should really pay more attention. I was trying to remember a joke about European engineers at the same time. FWIW, it goes something like this:

The German engineer is invited onto the board of directors.

The French engineer is invited to meet the boss's daughter.

The English engineer is invited to fix the boss's car (or TV or computer).

My brother just did ! Mind you, he's an IT manager, so I don't know if that counts.

I put my cv into a temp company that often staffed IT contractors to the government. I put in my salary reccomendations (a modest $20/hour), as well as my brief work experience (basically a college grad with one post grad IT job), and the ONLY job they sent to me was for

"a note taker for a few hours each thursday afternoon. $7/hour. Perfect for your high school student looking for their first part time job".
