-He hasn't posted in several hours- very unusual

-It seems as his post count was reset

-He's got a big X through his avatar

-His signature is now "MPS has left the building"

We can fucking hope so. Trolls have no place on a civilized forum.  I'm still disgusted that so many people actually defended his actions on other threads.  We need to be ruthless with people who blatantly troll and post ignorant bullshit in response to every thread that someone posts.

Care to provide some examples of trolling or ignorant bullshit?  Look, it's obvious you hate MPS because he called you out on your stupidity several times, but chill out.  Many people defended his actions because no matter how much he may aggravate you, he was usually correct in his criticisms.

I am still here, but it does look like they banned me...

Not sure WTF is up with that, but hey, can't expect mods to be mature or anything I guess.

I don't hate the guy at all.  I just find that he tends to respond to every single post (which is annoying since he usually contributes nothing) and posts nonsense that has nothing to do with the post.  That sort of behaviour should not be rewarded.

How about calling someone (a mod no less) a "little cunt"? In his signature. Which he promptly changed.

MPS is self destructing. I wonder if you're next.

I don't have total control of my account, so I cannot be held accountable for what my account does anymore.

Nice to know you are keeping an eye on that though.

    How am I 'self destructing'?

We have a childish, abusive mod with a 'little man' complex. Nothing more, nothing less.

Meh, if this site is really as far gone as I suspect, then I'll just move on.  The intelligence level has collapsed, I'm sick of being flamed by people simply because they have some personal problem with me or because I post unpopular opinions.  This is looking more and more like Slashdot circa 2000, which is somewhat depressing.  I guess every Internet community achieves a critical mass at which point the capacity for thoughtful, passionate and original discussion is lost.  I wish this place could have remained fascinating and avoided the bullshit political battles that always happen when you take a large enough group of people and give a few absolute power.  Still, I've definitely made some good friends here and had some good times so I do not consider it time wasted.

Indeed. I know of only maybe two or three people who didn't like how things were being run here by ammoQ. Let's see how many more like it when you have people making non-stop 'M$ sucks' and 'VB is TRWTF' remarks.

Yes, this was all me. As you may or may not have noticed, I don't participate in the forums very much these days. Back when I did, however, it was a fun, intelligent, and civil place of discussion. I've spent some time catching up these past couple weeks, and was very disappointed to see that it has become the complete opposite of that: a hostile environment unwelcoming new and old users alike. This is not the community I want to be associated with.

My decision to ban (well, try to ban - Community Server seems to have a bug with this module) was based on the simple fact that MPS's account was responsible for instigating almost all of this hostility/flaming/etc, especially in the "SideBar WTF" forum, which is where almost all new users start posting. Yes, there are a few others who are antagonistic, and it'll be just as easy to disable their account should I need to. This whole "moderator snafu" was mostly coincidental.

Agreed, i went away for a while too and when i came back was a little disgusted with the behaviour of certain promininet figures of the WTF community, a good move with the banning of MPS, it's a shame it didn't stick.

If i put the word "Nazi" here does that mean i automatically Godwin every thread i post in?

This seems an unfortunate decision.  I myself do regularly read the forums and although MPS is often the center of flamewars, more often than not it seems to be the result of a few particular members who do not care for him.  Add in the "MPS starts flamewars" rumor that people love to bring out at every opportunity and the thing is pretty much self-perpetuating, even without him having to do much at all.  The man truly cannot make a single comment without having it twisted by these members and touching off a flamewar.  I've seen threads derailed by arguments and flamebaiting of MPS without him even posting once.

I've long read this site and the quality of the community has been slipping for quite awhile now.  The last 6 months have been incredibly harsh.  I don't feel the solution is to ban users who are the target of flamebaiting and personal attacks.  It seems a bit like outlawing wealth because it encourages thiefs to steal.  Regardless, the loss of the intelligent members and the recent slipshod moderating have pretty much destroyed any value this forum or site ever held for me.  At this point it feels like I'd be stuck on a school bus with a bunch of drooling, screaming 1st graders and a few teachers armed with high-powered rifles.

BooHoo , sounds like you should go find yourself a new forum then.  The only "slipshod" thing about the moderating is that MPS wasn't banned sooner.  As for the quality, speaking as someone that's been a member for more than 7 months, yes the quality has gone, down it happened about the time you an MPS decided to grace us with your presence, i certainly noticed and it looks like alex noticed too.

I agree. Calling everyone idiots, morons, berating users that don't even have access to "the real tools", and derailing/trolling threads to the point of scaring away an OP isn't exactly the best argument to claim not being a troll.

I might add the MPS-enforced "XKCD reference ban" imposed, even if said comic was on-topic to the thread. As long as it isn't moderator-enforced, I don't see why to flame users for that.

the problem with banning MPS is that he's already driven away some of the people that used to post.  Without him the forums will be pretty quiet for a while until new people start coming or old people come back.

However, let me just say.  If you are wanting to know why a community has gone hostile, I first look if there is someone who is posting about as much as everyone else combined.  I've seen open source projects killed like that.  1 person makes every other reply to a thread/email.

I've look at today's posts so far, and it appears that lots of people are coming back after the events of the past few days.  We've also gotten a quite a few emails/messages from other members thanking us for getting rid of the trolling.  I'll try to post some numbers later on this week. I am not using any special admin/mod tools for this, using the search feature.

For example, last monday, all of the non-MPS non-Morbius posts totaled 76 for the entire day, 99 posts total.  It is 9:20 AM EST right now, and we are at 41 already.  And there's lots of new and older names showing up posting that we hadn't seen for a while, and the users posting seems much more diverse and varied so far. I suspect that as the week progresses and people realize they can safely have conversations again without being flamed and trolled incessantly, it will get even better.

UPDATE: Though I should add that I agree, I do expect the overall activity to drop a bit in the short term.

I did not become a TDWTF forum moderator to make friends. And by the way, I haven't.

Trolling would be doing that for the purposes of starting an argument.  I have to wonder where people get the idea that calling someone stupid and posting unpopular opinions is somehow "trolling".

Posting xkcd references in response to everything shows a pathetic lack of original thought and a defective sense of humor.  I'll adopt the whiny language and attitude of several people here: when you troll and derail a thread with a comic like xkcd you scare people away.

The quality has been dropping for over a year now.  The front page comments became unreadable almost 2 years ago.  The last 6 months have been some of the worst because all of the new users who join up, post terrible OPs and then jump on the "MPS is trolling me!" whinewagon.  Complain all you want, I don't remember you ever posting a single useful or interesting thing.

Of course you would, there are plenty of children on here who have a vendetta against MPS for whatever reason.  I don't think anyone ever denied that MPS was hated.  The question you need to ask yourself is whether that is because MPS was such a terrible member of the community or if it is because the attitudes you are cultivating here reward self-important whining and backbiting.

What happens when you get a bunch of nerds without any social skills, put them together in an internet forum and have them try to interact in a community?

Just read the threads where there are social skills required (Coin Change, Job interviews, etc).. and see whom answers what.. If you have a little bit of common sense, and social skills, you will see why a lot of people hate MPS, or how a lot of people can't get the morbs jokes 99% of the time.  There is a lack of social skills in these forum as I have never seen before in my life. And I've been to comic congresses, the premier of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and even played some role game once. (hey they had free beer!).

There is also this mindbuggling thing about lack of logic. I mean, nerds   programmers and developers, are suppossed to be very logic people. Go read any of the "hate" threads, and detach any feelings from it. Just try to read the logic behind every argument.  See again who posts what.

Now, when it comes to technicall (coding and all that stuff I know little about) debates, I have to say I've always found that guys like MPS o morb are the kind to be trusted for more reliable information. Not because they have more posts, but because their answers make sense (logic anyone?), are validated when contrasted with other sources information, and are never biased in the "PHP-M$oft-sucks-think-with-your-heart" bullshit that a lot of others try to push in here.

I'm not saying that I haven't felt the need to bitchslap MPS once in a while. I mean no one is perfect, and sometimes he can go overboard, but banning him, is as much a mistake as it is to delete posts.

Everyone in this forum lately has become so fucking touchy and sensible, that is making me sick. (well not really, is kind of amusing actually).  Anyone remember Cpound era? Man that dude got hitted hard... and always came back like a man.

And you know what is sad..that the people without social skills will deny it (or are in denial), and the ones without logic skills will never understand it.

Now everyone here should try to grow some skin..

Hm... I have never seen MPS post anything that was either a) interesting or funny b) indicates that he actually knows anything at all about how programming or software development works in general. And how would someone get this much free time, thus reaffirming point b. I'm not saying he is here because of some sort of online/forum addiction and doesn't know anything about programming, it's just his posts which indicate this. Even in his flaming, he never seems to actually understand the IT related content, but only seems to be able to flame the obvious.

I am most concerned about content though as opposed banning anyone like that one from awhile back who kept trying to promote his anti-Indian blog (was it sewer rat?)... actually they are pretty funny in their own respect, but MPS just kills off any... err every good thread...take a look at old posts:

I was with you up until this point.  I'm surprised more people don't understand jokes.  I've never seen such a drab, humorless group of people.  Hell, I actually tone my jokes down to make them less obscure and more easily digestible, a la South Park which I figure most people here have seen and like.  People, this is mainstream, quasi-intellectual pap and you are still missing it.

Expertise, perhaps.  "Whit"?  Hardly.  It's just a boring thread discussing the differences between "package" and "packet" in German.  Plus, looking for WTFs on Digg is like shooting inbred, mentally-challenged fish in a barrel.

Also, I can attest to MPS' technical ability.  Considering you are the one who actually wanted to work for a "web desktop" start-up, you probably shouldn't be throwing any stones.

I think locking this thread would be a fascist thing to do; let's let the people voice their opinions.  It's certainly on-topic for this particular thread, right?

What you can do is this: don't keep responding to every single post; if this thread bothers you so much, just don't read it.  It's not even about you.  (or -- is that the main problem you are having? too much attention for MPS, not enough for you?)

Also, I can attest to MPS' technical ability.  Considering you are the one who actually wanted to work for a "web desktop" start-up, you probably shouldn't be throwing any stones.

Something (common sense) tells me that the offer they made me is probably more than you make now. How do you get all the time to post here? Shouldn't you be taking devry courses?

Vechni-- please do me a favor, don't bother feeding the trolls.  He just desperately wants your attention; please don't return his insults and fan the flames.

I'd like to keep this thread on-topic if we can; if you'd like to comment on MPS being banned, that's fine, but let's not let morbius's pleas for attention derail things.

That's what I meant. (remember my falling into a "comma" issues)... Let me explain it for you simple and easy, try to follow me... 1. - If you have a sense of humour and a bit of social skills, 2.- you will see how other people without social skills, fail to see the humour. It's like social skills give you night goggles, and you can see why other people keep bumping into shit.. because they are in the dark.. they don't have night goggles or some sonar shit like bats.

Did I make myself clear? if not I'll write it in spanish and you let google translation do the work. I'm tired of you english as first language people not understanding me.

You have no problem with moderating something said by MPS but will not step in when we have a thread that is devolving into personal attacks against a user who cannot even defend himself?  This is called a double standard.  Enjoy your hypocrisy.

    Jeff S:
What you can do is this: don't keep responding to every single post; if this thread bothers you so much, just don't read it.

I consider it an ethical obligation to defend the reputation and intelligence of a man I respect who has been prevented from defending himself.  I wouldn't expect most of you to understand.

It's not even about you.  (or -- is that the main problem you are having? too much attention for MPS, not enough for you?)

Stop being such a smug little prick.  You got what you wanted: why do you still want to antagonize me?  Are you hoping you can push me far enough to get myself banned or are you just a sad little individual who has to wave his e-penis around to make himself feel better?

Hmm, I think I get it.  I thought you were implying I didn't have social skills which is why I am very much hated (and feared!) on these forums.  The opposite is most likely true, though.  Most of the people who despise me have no clue how people interact with other humans and find anything that doesn't conform to their carefully architected social protocols to be a terrifying, confusing and slightly erotic experience.

I'm going to go slightly off-topic for a moment. Apologies in advance.

My wife is a psychologist.  I mentioned to her how difficult it was to clean up this forum mess because the key players involved would not discuss anything rationally;  no facts or logic were were present in anyting they wrote, no consistency or effort to truly resolve the conflict, just name-calling, word-twisting, and an overall effort to extend the conflict at any cost.

She said something interesting: when debating with someone who is completely irrational, who repeatedly insults you and makes no effort to discuss reality, pay attention to what they say.  Each insult, each accusation, each thing they complain about is a perfect reflection of themselves.  That is, an irrational person will continually call you a "liar" when they are lying themselves; they will accuse you of name calling and being immature just as they are calling you names.  And so on.

I thought about what she said and then I went back and re-read some of these threads.   I could not believe how accurate the phenomenon she described was!

For those interested, pay attention to mobius's further posts.  Make note when he accuses and insults others, then enjoy a laugh as you realize what he is writing perfectly describes himself and his very own actions. It might be an entertaining and interesting way to "appreciate" his tired trolling, flaming and insulting.

In short, we shouldn't be offended when he calls us idiots or immature or accuses us of trolling and so on; we simply should laugh at him for perfectly describing himself.  Consider what you know about him, and his posting history, and read the insult he directed at me that I quoted above. Every single point he makes perfectly describes himself! It really is uncanny, isn't it?!

Alex:  Sorry, you seem to have lost your sense of humor, the posts by Morbius and MPS make my day.

Community:  Are you really so petty and insecure that you can no longer identify humour, feel slighted for any response that doesn't agree with your assertions, and require elementary school-like moderation so as not to get your feelings hurt?

A really piss-poor one, by the sound of it.  I'm sure she is proud of you for starting flamewars on an Internet forum and then deleting replies you don't like and getting members banned.  It almost makes up for the years of unsatisfying sex.

The rest of what you wrote is just nonsense and you know it.  Seriously, you sound like a crackhead.  One minute I'm a smart guy who is verbally abusive, the next I'm stupid and just projecting my frustrations onto others.  I suppose in the final act you will reveal that I was actually the long-lost king all along.  The fiction you've fabricated here isn't particularly creative or interesting, but you get bonus points for dragging your wife into an Internet argument to back you up.

First off, I think banning MPS is not appropriate. He should at least have been warned before all of this escalated.

But then the atmosphere around here has degraded enormously. Yes, calling out someone when he's wrong is definitely not trolling. But there's no need to throw around insults south park style like first graders.

Back in the days only the really stupid trolls were flamed for their stupidity. Being wrong once or twice doesn't mean you're a fucking moron. So some say "grow some balls, we're adults around here", but insulting everybody is childish. People whine about slashdot, but it's become more like 4chan around here where you're suppossed to be called whateverfag in every response. That's ok for 4chan, but not acceptable elsewhere.

It's really just a matter of what you want the forums to be like. I'd prefer it more civilized and to keep the flaming for the trolls.

    See what I mean?

By the way -- I don't think you are stupid (edit: wrote crack head orginally, meant stupid) at all.  (again, you might note that I've yet to insult you in any way personally)  I just think you are purposefully refusing to use any ration or logic when debating this topic.   I've tried to PM you privately and I've also publicly asked you over and over to discuss the specifics of what you think I did, and each time you refuse.   I even apologized for one delete that I did make on one of your posts because in retrospect, as I wrote to you, I took your reputation into account and deleted a borderline post that probably didn't require it.

Again, you can keep throwing out vague, generic insults and accusations about my actions, but that's all you keep doing and it means nothing. You are not willing to discuss anything rationally.  I think that you are very capable of rational thought and probabyl very intelligent, but I also think that you are purposely avoiding using those traits in these discussions, and that's too bad.

What do you think here is in need of arguing?  MPS is banned and the groundlings are hooting and drooling with delight.  People continue to insult MPS and myself, including your veiled and antagonistic comments.  I'm ignoring most of the insults, but I'm making an exception in your case.  I figure I might as well give the remaining few intelligent members something to chuckle at while the lunatics take overy the asylum.

I asked for it to be locked already.  Until then, I will respond to the inaccurate attacks against MPS.  Nobody is forcing you to read it, but unfortunately my sense of decency is requiring it of me.  Meanwhile, I'm not going to bother standing up to attacks against me by anyone as I see no point to it anymore.
