Is there a way to say to the Online Promotion Firm something like "not on my site!" ?

Somehow "Get the facts" is associated with a different religion for me.

Not only is it a dupe as has pointed out, but you titled this one as "The Biggest WTF". Considering random advertising is exactly that -- random -- it's not much of a WTF. So, you get a mug.

Imo, the stupid ones should be the ones who see the Ads. Those too stupid to install an adblocker and stupid enough to fall for the ads. Am I not right? No? Yeah you're wrong on that one. I don't pay for TV, and I don't pay for web sites. Ads are the reason why - and on most sites, the ads are appropriate and I click them frequently. I click ads for software I might want on development sites, and on hobby sites I click the ads for the new products. This is the same behavior as showing up at the local Subway for their $5 special, which I would not know about if it wasn't for the ads. Ads are good - they keep the web free, and if you're so annoyed by them that you can't focus on a site without blocking the ads, I think you're the one with the problem. For the most part, ads that you aren't interested in do nothing to harm your experience, and the ads that you are interested in, well - you should click them! Help the site owners keep the sites free - we're programmers here, we should be aware of the fact that web sites are not created and maintained for free... I have ads on my blog now - I put them there because I think they help people find products they need. If the ads were completely random I don't think I would like that, but the way they are, it's good. I don't care if I make any money from it, but I do think it's nice to have. For the users, not just for me.

I don't think there's any such thing as "random ads". If there is, you'd have to be pretty dumb to use them.
Fine, "algorithmically-chosen ads". Is that accurate enough, Professor Advertising?

Vaitrafra:Yeah, put aside the "complete different meaning".
I said "random" as in "not hardcoded". Even if it's chosen by an algorithm, it's still random as far as any visitor is concerned.

jasmine2501:For the most part, ads that you aren't interested in do nothing to harm your experience, and the ads that you are interested in, well - you should click them! Help the site owners keep the sites free - we're programmers here, we should be aware of the fact that web sites are not created and maintained for free... I don't think that the reason for ad blockers is that people are morally opposed to advertising (well, maybe some of them are). It's more that the standards for advertising on the web are... um... nonexistent, and without a blocker we're routinely assailed by obnoxious, invasive, flashing, seizure-inducing ads, which do a lot to harm our experience. Or worse, focus-stealing popups or giant Flash ads that suck up resources and slow down page load times. And of course there are always the NSFW ads that I see at work. I figure tit for tat - whenever I have one of those ads foisted on me, I block that entire ad network. If the ads on a site are tasteful I leave them alone. I think if everybody did this, it wouldn't suddenly force us all to pay for content, it just might force the advertisers to be a little more discerning in their taste. Because that is the problem; TV networks and radio stations screen their ads, while online advertisers don't seem to give half a damn. Hell, there have even been instances of drive-by-downloads happening in ads. Any advertiser careless enough to let this through should be shut down immediately.

The meaning isn't different at all. It was quite clear what Abbydon was referring to, Cap'n Steve is just an idiot troll who likes to show the world how poor his reading comprehension is. Sort of like you, actually.
