I'm afraid I don't have a screenshot of this, but whilst browsing Monster.co.uk I noticed something rather odd every time I clicked on the 'Apply Online' icon. This normally opens a pop-up window, but I have Firefox set up to open them in a new tab instead. Monster's website seems not to understand this, and promptly puts up a textbox saying 'Your pop-up blocker is preventing the site from functioning correctly", despite the fact that it actually makes no difference whatsoever; the Apply Options page opened contentedly in a new tab and I was able to apply as normal.

This doesn't seem all that weird or harmful until you consider the fact that Firefox's pop-up blocker doesn't trigger for pop-ups that trigger when you click a link on the page anyway. And that tabbed browsing has been around for long enough that it really should have occurred to Monster's web design team that it might be a good idea to make sure messages like this don't appear inappropriately and confuse and annoy anyone viewing their site with a screen-reader.

...especially when the main site is nothing but a logo or something along with javascript to open a popup which contains the REAL site... 

 Actually, when you click a JAVASCRIPT link, most pop-up blocker will indeed block it unless you have the settings turned down/off for that particular site, or your popup blocker sucks.

Personally, I regard the assumption that if I clicked the link then I probably need to see what's in the pop-up as one of Firefox's good points, though I can see how it might be a disadvantage for less experienced users.

No, a good pop-up blocker will allow a javascript link. Pop-up blockers are only supposed to block unrequested pop-ups. If I click on a link I want it to work. (We'll ignore the fact that navigating to a new page or opening a new window when you click a link are things that pure html can do easily and don't require javascript.)

And that's how you end up with your browser opening 40 popup windows to random garbage from some site's annoying javascript code link. In my opinion I'd rather the first time i click a link that is javascript, it gives me the warning, instead of blasting me with whatever that javascript can do. Granted, if it were malicious javascript, popup blocking is probably the least of your worries. I hate even having to turn on the javascript to make a web page work in the first place really.

What can I say? I don't like being patronised by my web browser. I don't think Monster even uses Javascript for this function anyway.

Lots of sites use new windows in ways that aren't necessary, but they make the flow of the site a lot smoother.  Like when my session times out on yahoo mail, it pops up a window asking me to re-authenticate, rather than redirecting me all over the place.  Unnecessary, but it makes the whole thing a bit smoother.

I've never seen that happen. Maybe my pop-up blocker only allows the first window on a link, or maybe I just don't visit the right type of malicious sites.

Ok, that is a pretty good use for a popup, but 99% of the time, opening links in new tabs or just clicking every link in the main window and using the back button a lot is much smoother. If you click on a link, it should open in the current window.
