He didn't say it is a privilege.. just "some benefit". And "genious" can mean something other than perfect code.. it could be genius as much as Dr. Frankenstein's work (insanely mad, but genius because it worked). So the benefit from that would be exposure to an abhorrent monstrosity.

 There is so much wrong about this.

Genuis Code?  So if I think it is crap I'm the one at fault huh?   I might be, but since you have a tight budget I bet you always had a tight budget and could never afford a non-fili, err, I mean Genuis coder before.

Benifit to working on it?  If I'm only making minor adjustments my only benefit will be the pay and you already said you can't really afford me.

Agreed.  This is true failure.

The code may be genius but you can't even spell it.

Maybe it's genius as in "OMG I never would have thought about trying it that way!   Using the builtin limitations of an integer to store map coordinates!"

Honestly, I'd tell him that you're insulted at the tone of his email, and that if he ever wants to work with you in the future he'll take courses in not being a dick.

If you published that without the asterisks you could possibly single handedly run this guy out of business and that might be deserved by the tone of that note.

There's no typo here, he's just trying to create a new word because he's never seen anything like this before. 

It's obvious that he means the only reason the code works is because there is a genie who uses his magic to make the code do what it's supposed to do.

The benefit of working with such code is obviously that you get the one remaining wish from the genie (The first two wishes were for the code to work and the original programmer wishing to get as far away from this job as possible).

Genious probably means its too complicated for them to understand. Since it works its "beyond them" so they want a guy to work for minimal wage with this insane code... Yea go for it...But say "I am working under the assumption the code is Genious, so for every stupid mistake I come accross in the code you must pay me 100 bucks extra."

Clearly genious is the opposite of ingenious.

And who said it was "genious," the programmer who originally wrote it? If so, run far, run fast, don't look back.

 Not only that, but the guy sending the email probably wrote it, and has now turned to management and doesn't have time to maintain his genius code anymore

I would not be surprised. When this "genious" left we had a party, then made an effort to undo all the design decisions he ever made. Took some time but it was worth it.

 Actually sorry Idid not give all the details: His dirty fingers reached many products, but only one product was completely cleaned of his insanity. Unfortunately a much bigger product still had his stench at the end. It became such a monster, may have even rivaled codethulu... It was decided that the entire project was to be re-written taking only key logic from the original which was written by non-instane people.

The client was a certain local search website. Based on the features & overall useability on the site, I highly doubt it's "genious" code :-).

 I'm working on genious code right now.  At least everyone tells me that the guy that wrote it was a genius.  However this code, and the development processes around it, could supply The Daily WTF with material for at least a good week.
