SpectateSwamp:
A Mac or Linux version could possibly handle this spaghetti code better.

Hey SpectateSwamp! I see you still haven't tried Notepad++

It's better than SSDS, and not only that; it can run SSDS! So you can edit SSDS and just jam it and you can edit Notepad++ (it's open source) and just jam it to do anything you could ever want.

I bet you're just afraid of a showdown between the two systems. Notepad++ can trump SSDS in desktop search and usability everytime. Where's my showdown? You and all your yappity yapping and you can't even beat Notepad++. You'll never come up with the goods.

I jammed a plugin last year. Win32 GUI programming is. PainFull.

Some Sheppey inhabitants like to call themselves Swampies, a term that began as, and for some people remains, an insult; for others it has become a term of endearment or a phrase for reinforcing identity.

Ya, it's a "middot" character (· - HTML entity ·) with every Unicode combining diacritical mark (and whatever those other doodads on it might be called).
plz send t3h codez! srsly!

I want to put that one in my script now that I know what it is.

Since this is a Swamp thread, an examination of it in 72-point red font is called for. I'd make it scroll too but the <marquee> tag doesn't seem to work here.

Am I missing the joke here? All I see is a sting of characters about half-a-page long.. Also, isn't a middot a dot that's, uh, at the mid-point of letters? Like myah: ·

Opera 9 on WinXP shows it as a single "character". I guess weather vane is as close to its description as any. What are you using?

FF2 on Linux. Either my setup is smart enough to realize that diacritical marks shouldn't sit atop each other or it's too stupid to realize that they are supposed to sit atop anything (more likely). Still, "middot" must be some kind of nickname for that monstrosity because a real middot isn't anything like that.

I get the long string as well if I force FF2 out of UTF-8 for the page's character encoding (ie: switch to iso-8859 or billsoft-1252).

I am just using what the page tells me (UTF-8) and I get the screenshot above. If I switch to some non-unicode encoding it outputs junk (as expected).

The strange thing is that I see it as the blob in the tags and when Ender put it in a message. With the red 72-pt version, I only see the dot.

He is probably refering to REALbasic and/or Gambas.

My sarcasm-detector may be broken, but do you really think SS knows anything about basic compilers on other systems than Windows when he learned about VB.net only a couple of days ago? Do you even think he knows anything about Mac or Linux? He may have read the names, right, but I seriously doubt that he'd recognize MacOS X (let alone a Gnome desktop) if you showed him...

His ideas are a whole pile of crap. He may have read about "portable" software, but he has no grasp whatsoever of the concept. I assume he defines "portable" by "can take it with. Me on DVD."

Boy, he was even talking about doing identical program versions in different languages (some posts ago: First do a .net version, then port it to C and then to Java)! What should be the point of that? He can't even get one version right in the most "basic" language there is... If he'd wanted portability, he'd have chosen Java or Mono or ANSI C for the new version...

I'd say, let him play a little with VB.net - at least he stopped posting pictures of compression artifacts he considers to be aliens...

Weren't you paying attention? The compression artifacts are aliens. Why else could birds (any old birds, not just medicinie birds) see them?

See, Spectate! Eternal Density testifies to how excellent Notepad++ is.

While I agree that SSDS is a wonder and useful programme, it can't top Notepad++ for ease of use and extensibility. You have to admit that SSDS pales in comparison, or bring it to a showdown.

Showdowns aren't necessary. Can Notepad++ do Random Video? Or Large Font Scrolling Text with Highlighting? Hardly.

So after doing a little research into Unicode, apparently my browser/OS are behaving correctly and anyone who sees the blob should not be. Combination characters like diacritics should only pair with base characters.
