Think about it guys... THINK...you are discussingporting a BAD VB application to VB.NET. Furthermore it is pretty well known that GREP (ported to Windows from linux binaries, see UnixUtils an old windows project) already does the same job as SSDS. If you want to implement SSDS correctly, program a front-end to grep and have it work on a single file. This will solve all of SSDS' bugs instantly because grep not working is a hardware failure at this point. Once we have a front-ended grep, we can add w/e commands SS came up with to it later as "features". Best part is you can write this in any language granted that you can execute grep... Hell you can even do one better, just use the language's internal regex... say... java regex, or ruby regex, you won't even have to do much work after that...

 

For extra points just create a script called ssds.cmd which will be compatible with DOS (latest one available) and when executed it will print one line: Do not use this script under any circumstance. Please rethink what you want to do and then get the appropriate program for it.

I don't want to implement it correctly.  I want to maintain all the hideously poor design of the original, but in a language people may actually have compilers for.  The correct way to implement SSDS is to download GDS and forget this piece of crap ever existed.

Dude, WTF? Why would you spend your time implementing a POS so that anyone can compile it? It should be posted in its unedited entirety all in one page at once with a small dot saying "you are here" with a side-by-side commentary from us about what each line does and how it can be done better. It will be required reading in colleges as to "how to NOT write your programs". After the students bang out their brains trying to understand it there will be a comment "now that you understand it, realize that this program is 100% useless because during design time the author refused to look up how regular expressions work or the concepts of indexing."

Unfortunately the above solution will also have the bug of being an effective torturing device and stealing the recepient's soul. It may wind up being banned in the USA due to the "cruel and unusual punishment" clause in that thing called the constitution.

IMO we should all ignore the current source for ssds and try to reverse engineer the original SSDS and create some freaky monster, optionally even better that the last omg winner, so then swampy could "learn" .net from looking at it, tho delivering something that actually works fine could be fun too.

The two versions will be almost exactly the same.  They'll use the same stupid logic, the same crappy old-school VB error handling, the same bad algorithms.  The only major differences between the two are

1. All the GoSub labels are now separate procedures
2. I have to implement a system to emulate the VB5/6 form painting in GDI.

So unless #2 is significantly slower than VB5's native methods, there will be no appreciable speed difference.

Funny, usually measuring the momentum of a particle will alter it.  But this thread has become dedicated to studying and observing the phenomenon of SpectateSwamp and it has not changed him at all.  While we're occupied with finding and discussing SwampQuotes and such, he keeps chugging along obliviously as if we were just smiling and nodding.  Perhaps the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle doesn't apply to SpectateSwamp?  I'm not sure whether that is due to the stones, the aliens, SSDS, or that he's simply incapable of changing to a different quantum state.  Perhaps there will be custard pie available?

No, OMGWTF's have to be far simpler, but since SSDS is the ONLY PROGRAM YOU WILL EVER NEED, it should be able to fulfill any OMGWTF contest requirement.

Eample - SwampCalc:
1. Use SSDS to put math problem in a text file and launch it in Notepad.
2. Use Notepad to print the file.
3. Mail printout to 9th grader, wait for reply.
4. Video in reply.
5. Index the video and set it to pause on the part with the best view of the answer. (Be careful not to use start/wait where staart/waait are required!)
6. Screenshot each frame and circle any suspicious specks.
7. Have SSDS flash each of those pics on the screen for 1/10 second while videoing in the result with a DVD camcorder.
8. Watch the resulting DVD, note the answer to the math problem.
9. Upload the video and spam it on forums.thedailywtf.com as evidence of aliens.

Perhaps a simple random number generator? (obviously consisting of a text file with thousands of lines consisting of "num: " followed by some number, then using SSDS to search for "num: " and flash random matches, with the highlight color set to the background color so as to hide the "num: " tag)

Actually, "SpectateSwamp" is a pretty useless definition of an observable. For the Uncertainty Principle to work, we need two non-commutating observables, otherwise we will measure the same things over and over again.

I do think his literacy is changing every now and then, so if we could establish that "SpectateSwamp's literacy" and "SpectateSwamp's lunacy" do not commutate, we could try to change his lunacy by looking at his literacy.

 But even then I guess the lunacy part of his wavefunction looks like 0.9999|nutjob> + 0.00009|crazy> + 0.00001|normal>.

Clearly they were not leaves nor bugs, but alien spaceships sent to monitor him with the aid of the big crow that has occaisionally been seen in Doug's garden. Conveniently forgetting the rules of three-dimentional space, Doug thought that their apparent proximity in his videos indicated that they were in cahoots against him. That's a pretty good story. Way better than I could have put it. A few points I'd disagree on but good.

The large fishhead stone is so big that It wouldn't have moved far. That picture is the worst I've seen to. Just a tiny bit better than nothing.  

The Dolphins in the bank story. Was from 40 years back. I went with my friend looking for the spot. He wasn't sure if it was upstream or down. But either way there are only so many banks to  check. If there were 2 Dino Mummies there could have been more. Maybe new ones are exposed now. Seems everything that died around here got mummified. Dino Mummy central is my backyard. I just finished downloading VB.net I'm sure I can program in VB.net just as badly as VB5.0 Geez me taking advice and not giving it. Looks like it's time for SpectateSwamp to move on and find another group to bug.

For my VB build I'll have SSDS run a control file of edits on the original Source.txt file. Making all the changes that are required that way. Comment out the stuff that doesn't work and work on it later. If the progress isn't that good. I'll look at another language. I'll make changes to the VB5.0 version. then process the VB.net edits and Jam the both of them. That should be fun.
