In the case of the whole keyboard versus mouse debate, I think he really believes that keyboard is faster and superior (in all cases) to the mouse.  Look at SSDS, for cripes sakes!  For once I would like to see Spectate admit he is wrong about something, which is why I challenged him to find a computer user who would not mind giving up using a mouse forever.  

I know, it's kinda crazy.  I think Spectate has that effect on some people....

If you had any skill whatsoever, you'd find that the entirety of the keyboard is quickly accessible.  I can type anything on the keyboard while looking away.  Just because you're apparently hunt-and-pecking doesn't mean that touch typing is beyond the grasp of the common man.  Pay attention, man.  The current generation of kids are all going to be vastly more effective with the keyboard than your generation or mine, simply by the ubiquitous nature of computers today.

Way back I was a pricing clerk. I used an adding machine all day. At that time auditors were considered the very fastest at adding numbers up. I was even faster. How about the speed of telegraph operators. There could fly with just tappity tap. People will learn shortcuts if they are real time savers. At the pulp and paper mill. The users would be in 4 or 5 different sessions at a time. Finding a purchase order or inventory item, supplier or vendor number. In those sessions. I'd save the entry in Spectate_invent.txt or Spectate_po.txt ... file containing the last 10 occurances. When they switched to the other session all they had to do to call it up, was enter "." (period) enter. If they wanted the most recent number, another enter would select that item. I showed it to the staff. None of them jumped right in. I was working 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off then. When I came back they were all using it. And pointing out places where I missed implementing the utility. The people that designed the system were all smarter than poor poor old SpectateSwamp and I improved on their work. Left handers shouldn't be ignored either. Do inset numeric and quick keys for them. Keyboards should have an enter key on the left as well. Typewriters did.

You do realize that every program does different things, so shortcuts for every program are different. People only learn shortcuts for programs they frequently use, and even then not always. If you want special shortcuts that YOU like to do exactly what you want, its called macros available in some programs, and you can even cusotmize the shortcut keys to what you like in most programs.

 

Also as I have suggested earlier:

Get a copy of "The Wiggles: Big Red Boat" and watch it. There is a skid there about thinking about others. Trust me watch it once, twice, twenty times, once you understand then come back and tell us your revelation, but not a minute before!

I'm left-handed, and I've never wished for an enter key on the left side of the keyboard.  I have no trouble pressing Enter with my right hand.  This reminds of when the first iMacs came out, and you could plug in your mouse into either side.  A friend excitedly told me about it, to which I responded, "Why would I want to do that?"  I'm used to using the mouse with my right hand, and it leaves my stronger hand on the keyboard, which requires more dexterity.

Dvorak's not bad.  The only reason I don't still use it is because it took a little while to switch gears every time I was forced to use a QWERTY keyboard.  Of course, now I use one of these, and I seem to manage that just fine.

Nope. I use those all the time still because I used them for so many years in DOS. The only time I use the CTRL+X/C/V is when the application uses special data and doesn't respond to the SHIFT ones.

I only used them for about 2 or 3 years in DOS before switching to Windows 3.1, but it was enough that I prefer them to Ctrl+XCV (but I was around 10, so this might make a difference). I do use the Ctrl shortcuts when I work with mouse, but while typing it's always the old ones. I also once noticed on some very locked down machine that they somehow disabled the Ctrl+XCV keys (don't ask why), but the old shortcuts still worked fine.

Don't worry... I do it too.  I hate it when I am in a Java-based program and it doesn't recognize those commands (MatLab... I am looking at you!)

In this case, I don't think it's a question of which way is "correct" or "wanting to learn new things".

Just because a right-handed mouse is good for right-handed people like me, doesn't mean it is good for left-handed people.  Just because bstorer is comfortable using a right-handed mouse, doesn't mean all left-handed people are comfortable doing so.

If you doubt this, switch the handedness of your mouse (e.g. from right to left) and see how comfortable you are with that.  Try switching your dominant hand for batting/pitching/shooting basketballs/using chopsticks/whatever and see how easy it is.

As long as you sit such that the keboard is lower than your elbows, no, because your fingers kinda fall into the pits.  It's actually the most comfortable keyboard I've ever owned for extensive typing.  It does suck for the C family of languages, though, but what keyboard doesn't?

It's already been done. That one doesn't have an Enter key on the left side though, unless you count the one on the keypad.

My wife uses the mouse on the left side. She says it's uncomfortable for it to be on the right. I can usually tell when she's been on my computer because she tends to forget to put the mouse back. The strange thing is that she doesn't remap the buttons, so she ends up left-clicking with her middle finger. I'd think that would be uncomfortable. I like my trackball here at work, though. I left-click with my thumb and right-click with my pinky.
