People will show you the key elements of the language you need to know and you are off. 2 or 3 weeks using a new language making changes to applications and you can be almost up to speed. What the heck? Why are you avoiding it? It's a simple question out of curiosity. And it's a lie that moving isn't difficult. If it wasn't, how come you haven't gotten out of VB5 and moved to C++ ? (free compilers are available). I'll tell you why. It IS difficult.

Here, I'll go first: GWBASIC -> QBASIC 4.5 -> VB 3 -> VB 6 / ASP (VBS) / VBA -> C# 2.0. Toss in HTML 4, CSS 2, and JavaScript for web. Dabbled in various others and can work with other technologies (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, XML, whatever).

It is not always about replacements. During my mapping project. The users were having nervous breakdowns trying to learn this complex system. Right from the start they had a 23 step proceedure to tie down the physical map to the digitizing board. I preloaded the 6 tiedown points at the beginning of the Map file and reduced the instructions to 6 or 8. That was the initial step in mapping and it panicked them. With this simple change the users were quickly digitizing away. The project was a success. They got their own mapping system. I had help developing my first program there as well. Well, he probably has some BASIC in his past before VB.  Since he says he worked on VAXen, it's a good bet that he used VAX BASIC.   I'd bet he learned BASIC first, and then programmed in other languages using exactly those constructs which translated over from BASIC.  And since he did data processing data data processing, how about something like PL/I?  I can easily picture him only making use of perhaps 10% of its power.

They cheered me at the end of my speech. Not one of the other candidates got a cheer like that. The kids knew I wasn't lying to them. Moving from one language to another isn't difficult. Moving from one language to another and learning the peculiarities of that language is trickier.

Swampy's code is the equivalent of #include "my_ugly_pseudo_stoneage_environment.h". In other words, just like he said, he learnt the language - but not how to properly use it to create a compelling Windows application. You know, all of the "form control" things on a "GUI". Or these "subroutines" that the language also allows, unlike whatever crap he used before.

I remember clearly one beautiful winter day. I was walking outside - I can't remember why I was outside, but I remember there was plenty of nice beautiful snow. And I got this sudden revelation.

"So that is what the subroutines really mean."

You see, my background is in 8-bit microcomputer BASICs. When I got to PC land, I started with GWBASIC. Everyone in my class was coding in this "Pascal" thing. I had downloaded this "Visible-Pascal" thing since I couldn't quite afford Turbo Pascal at that point (and I actually bought TP7 for DOS later on, and boy, was that ever fun). And, VPascal being an environment for people who were learning the language, the documentation specifically says "But the GOTO statement is specifically excluded, as encouraging bad habits!" How, exactly, was I supposed to do anything interesting, if I couldn't do GOTOs? A big dilemma for a BASIC expatriate!

I remember some things falling in right place in my mind. Oooh, so that is what the thing means. I need to do GOSUBs and organise everything in separate subroutines and there is no need to mash around like a loon with GOTOs. It is hard to describe the transformation, really: I just suddenly understood what I had been doing wrong.

A beautiful day - I could understand how to do something better. Some time later, we had a programming class in school - this time, using Turbo Pascal. I remember one of my friends, another fellow 8-bit BASIC expatriate, struggling with the Pascal syntax. "This doesn't make sense!" he said one week. But you know what he said next week? "Wow! This is amazing! You can do really amazing stuff with this thing!" Pretty much what I felt, too.

And you know what? Since that, there's been plenty of such paradigm shifts for me. A lot of things look just weird beforehand; For a long time I just didn't get the C pointers, now I do. There's been a lot of advances that I've learned of that made me feel "wow, I can code much better now that I know about that one." Things like object orientation, variable scopes, how common data structures really work, what memory allocation actually entails, relational database model in general, just to mention a few really basic ones... And I definitely admit there's plenty of stuff I don't get right now, even after a few decades of happy toying with computers; maybe one day I actually understand Haskell syntax with those monads and doohickeys and whatever. It's obviously clever, I just don't get it right now.

So, em, I guess I'd be delighted to hear what sort of paradigm shifts mr. Swamp has had? What sort of useful moments of understanding have you, mr. Swamp, had, that allow you to easily understand the fundamentals of a new programming language?

Well, you completely ignored my previous challenge about proving the world is as simple as you say it is.  Let me restate it: using only your own 2 hands, your copius intellect and raw materials:

• Build your own camcorder from scratch
  
• Design and build your own laptop
• Write an operating system from scratch
• Write a media player from scratch (i.e. you don't get to use MCISendString())
• Write a web browser from scratch

Oh, you can't do any of those things?  You take all of the amazing achievements of geeks and educated people for granted.  They have helped make the industrialized world into an amazing place where we have so much free time and disposable income that you can sit around posting spam to random message boards and uploading video that nobody cares about. 300 years ago, we would all be busy trying to survive, rather than living the comfortable lives we do.

Seriously, you think a doctor doesn't need more than a Grade 9 education?  So you would be comfortable with a Grade 8 kid performing open-heart surgery or a liver transplant on you?  You have travelled to the U.S. and different provinces in Canada.  Did you fly?  Can you build your own airplane from scratch?  Do think the people who designed the planes that carried you from place to place had more than a Grade 9 education?

You think that the people who designed your laptop didn't need an education?  How about the people who designed the technology that makes ALL YOUR HIGH-TECH TOYS POSSIBLE?  You think your fucking digital camera, laptop, camcorder, truck, television, and stereo would be possible in a world where nobody gets an education?

Obviously they could relate to you because you are around their mental age.  Also, good job winning the hearts of Grade 8 kids.  Last time I checked, you have to be 18 to vote in Canada.

Kids are great and all (we were all once kids!), but they don't exactly have the greatest judgement (*).  That's why they are placed under their parents care until they are 18.  Or are you suggesting that kids should be emancipated from their parents after Grade 9?  I would really like to hear the answer to this one.

I wrote a Desktop Search Engine. What have you done that makes the Geek World tremble. I must tell you I loved it when I put the line numbers back in. I knew the Geeks would go wild. Pure wild. My major "paradim shifts" came when the users loved what I was doing. That's where the real fun in "Data processing" resides. There have been numerous times If they weren't singing songs about me, they were definitely humming a tune.

I could tell you some stories because I have nearly 40 years time to collect some. Your stores are dull and boring. Prove to me otherwise.

CodeSimian, thanks for your last two posts. I don't really care how Spectate takes it, I do have an appreciation for all other programmers before me, and while I might have accomplished quite a bit in my short career, it is nothing compared to what a lot of others have done. I know a lot of people bash microsoft, but if you look at it all in reality, its almost a miracle that (any product name here) works in the first place. You have large teams of developers working on different sections of an operating system or application and by the end all the pieces are like an orchestra playing. We can make some neat programs pretty easily these days, but we still use an IDE and usually some type of framework or API. Without those prerequisites, we would constantly be reinventing the wheel. It puts into perspective how well off we are to have these tools at our disposal.  Besides, even though programming can be kind of competitive and we are competitive by nature, the true value of software is determined by customers. We all think our software is pretty cool, but if you can't convince customers to feel the same way, it was all for nought. 

As far as the teenagers go, they would think anything is cool simply because its different. It is something that is beyond what they understand with their limited experiences that they had so far. It is a good thing to get them excited so that we will get more people coming into the field into the future, but it does not say a darn thing about the quality of your work.

Why any sane person (and this pretty much explains your opinion) would want to introduce line numbers back into a program is beyond me - please justify it if you can. Equally explain why giving line numbers that don't reflect the line number is a good idea...
