Re: Desktop Search & Video (Way powerful)
Outlaw Programmer: SpectateSwamp:
Search is about having access to your data. Passwords and all. On a personal level I have no problem with people finding any of my data. All I need is a good backup.
This is the nail in the troll-coffin for me. Move along guys, nothing more to see here. No need to argue about the product when it's clear is just a joke anyway.
What impresses me is the amount of effort that went into producing the source code for this thing. It almost deserves a place in the Architecture & Design gallery of the MoMA.

Again, I argue no sane person would have done this purposely or not.

Re: Don't be so lazy soviut
SpectateSwamp: Soviut:I can't believe you try to video tape your books! Not only are there resolution issues, but the entire thing is unsearchable! I can't search a video for a particular quote, not without manually reading through the whole thing over again. Stupid idea, stupid implementation, stupid stupid stupid!
Catalog the page starts that's all. Why wait forever for some automated procedure. Lazy SOB lazy lazy lazy.
So, rather than just download the electronic version of the book and search the PDF I have to manually "catalog the page starts"? This is a pretty crap desktop search if I have to go cataloging crap like that. You're like one of those old guys who gets a video camera and is amazed by "the power of video" 15 years after everyone else got over it. Rather than video taping your TV in "slow motion" (note: its actually frame by frame when you're stepping through it, not slow motion), just take the video and crop out that part to upload. Oh wait, you don't believe in editing. Guess grandpa doesn't know HOW to edit.

MasterPlanSoftware: Soviut:Why did you name it "cript" with an i, when you obviously know how to spell "encrYption"!?
Maybe it was a brief flash of common sense, as he realized that what cript.txt is used for is nothing like encryption... And then *poof* it was gone.
Hah, security through obfuscation?

Re: Cataloging takes time. Do it as you go.
SpectateSwamp:500 books - I'm talking about maybe videoing in a handwritten copy of a cook book chatting it up as to when and where grandma would make these meals. Video can add way more than any scan. DVD's cost less than 25 Cents. So where is the problem?
Sometimes having additional audio commentary to a book might be useful. I think those times are far exceeded by the times where you just want the content in the book. The important content of a book is the words. You want to be able to search, not just for page 15 of this book, but for where in this book was this quote, where does it discuss this topic. Where's this particular recipe. Sure you could keep extensive notes on what is found on each page and cross reference that with where in the video each page is shown, but actually having the text to search is much easier and much better (and takes up much less space). DVDs cost less than 25 cents, but a huge stack of DVDs is impossible to search.

Re: Cataloging takes time. Do it as you go.
SpectateSwamp: Randomly double clicking. This one can display them at 20 to 30 a second. For hours if I want it.
You must have a strong tolerance against nausea, and obviously aren't suffering from epilepsy. 20-30 random images a second aren't going to be useful to anyone except as a poor-man's strobe light. SpectateSwamp: I'll have to dig up some of that.
Why dig? Isn't it stored in your wonderful Desktop Search application, which solves all the world's problem? Should be just a matter of microseconds to locate its record. Oh, that's right... it doesn't actually store anything unless you enter it first...
SpectateSwamp: People don't have scanners they have camcorders in their telephones. You do realize that pretty much 99% of people won't ever use their cellphones for more than (woah, what a concept) telephone calls, and if young enough, obsessive text messaging? SpectateSwamp: They need a way to start organizing all that video. Again, 99% of people who actually use their cellphones to take video aren't going to be taking more than a few minutes at most, and even then, will never look at it again, unless it happened to be a "Don't tase me, bro!" moment. SpectateSwamp: You are too far behind the curve to be helped. Sorry. *cry* really harsh, man... and here I was thinking I was up-to-date to at LEAST the 1970s... I think I'll just crawl back into bed and cuddle up with my brick of punchcards. They at least understand me.
.... not.

Apparently he really is so mentally crippled he cannot spell anything correctly. 'do the encription here november 20 2000 If UCase(ttt) = "CRIPT" Then encript = "CRIPT" xtemp = Cmd(32) GoSub line_16000 GoSub line_29500 'encription array read case_yes = "Y" GoSub replace_29000 GoTo File_40 End If 'do the de-encription here november 20 2000 If UCase(ttt) = "DECRIPT" Then encript = "DECRIPT" xtemp = Cmd(32) GoSub line_16000 GoSub line_29500 'encription array read case_yes = "Y" GoSub replace_29000 GoTo File_40 End If 'set up for the de-encription here november 20 2000 If UCase(ttt) = "MYSTUF" Then encript = "MYSTUF" xtemp = Cmd(32) GoSub line_16000 GoSub line_29500 'encription array read case_yes = "Y" GoTo What_50 End If

vgrep[1]
No, it's not available as source.
[1] Sadly a Google for this (alone) no longer produces the correct result in the first 10 matches.

GAH! MY EYES!!!
Haha - this thread amused me so much, I joined the company... Mr SpectateSwamp, Having recently been taking a novice through the painful-but-rewarding experience of learning programming, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt wrt the troll issue, and simply attempt to explain the reaction you've provoked, as I'm not quite convinced you're sure what's going on. As far as I can tell, your basic idea is laudable - you want to be able to organise your enormous file collection. That's great. We all do. It's even possible that you've looked at all the other Desktop Seach programs out there, found that none of them were good enough, and like many of us have done before, decided to make a better mousetrap. That's all fine. The thing is, you then posted code. To here. This is the place where programmers come to feel good about themselves by laughing at other people's code - well, I do anyway :) From other posts and the articles, I reckon that most of the people here are in the same boat as myself, with 10 < $experience < 50 years in writing, reading, editing and criticising code, both our own and others. And to be honest, I have to add my voice to the crowd - that really is very very poor code. At random, I quoted the few lines above to just give you some hints about what we're talking about. This is a classic game of WTF, and I'm sure others will enjoy playing along :) If (a condition) Then Do Something. If (a mutually exclusive condition) Then Do something Else. The key word there is 'Else'. Ucase(ttt) can't ever be both 'CRIPT' and 'DECRIPT' at the same time, so it's a waste to check whether it is. Look up the 'Else' keyword in a book. Except of course, here it's "Then Do exactly the same thing except for one line" . This is classic "cut-and-paste" code - made even more obvious by the fact that the comment wasn't changed after the paste. Have a long hard think about how you can reduce this section of code to half its size, and you'll be on your way to your first 'Zen of Programming' moment :)

Worst code ever is the most powerful of programs.
PerdidoPunk:
What impresses me is the amount of effort that went into producing the source code for this thing. It almost deserves a place in the Architecture & Design gallery of the MoMA.
So far you haven't seen this Search perform. Just looked and critiqued the code so far. But that's a start.
How can code with so many GOTO's possibly work. Is it a miracle. How can an illiterate write code that works? so many questions.
Has anybody had any luck building a new executable? Does the search work on vista?
