A glorified launcher... for $69.99?

  • I really don't have words for this. Some retarded "company" is selling a program that is essentially a launcher for $69.99. Found it on BitsDuJour as the deal of the day. From the box shot you know it's crap. It seems interesting when you read the description, but actually downloading the program, you find a horribly made UI. I was really confused at the main UI. I was expecting some sort of list where I can look at services, but there was only this list with a bunch of tools and a GO button. And picking a tool actually did nothing. Oh, and it's made in Java... for a Windows specific program. I took a crack at this program in JD, and sure enough, it's just a (not) pretty GUI. Heck, these retards hardcoded their serial numbers, and for extra fun, put them in a plain text file for all to see. What a bunch of retards.

SWSC from the makers of SSDS

  • Wow... I wouldn't download anything from that site in my life. Anyway, you know it's going to be crapware when the only screenshot is from the about dialog.

Dad?  You must be my dad, because he's the only guy I know who buys those pieces of "software" located in the bins labeled "$3 - $5 CLEARANCE", or download and install every piece of software under the sun because it was "free", or buys some crapware from a sketchy site based on a single screen-cap of the about dialog.

Any luck on getting a refund?

  • I hope that the 'deal of the day' was for 95% off.

About dialog? That's the main GUI!
I actually don't care about the crap on that site. I just use it as a source for random stuff to poke a debugger into.

Actually it was 100% off, for filling in a short survey with bogus information and leaving "YOUR PRODUCT SUCKS!" in the comments field. Still going on, too.

Nope, that dignity is lost forever. But they'll refund him 1,000% of his money!

  • Well guys.. Windows 8 is a glorified launcher and it will cost $130 soon.

But to be honest you do get the entire rest of the OS as well.

    Sounds like a great sell.

Aw, quit complaining about it already.  Compare the size of the start menu to your entire desktop.  Compare the size of a menu entry on the start menu to the size of a start screen tile.

  • Current Windows 8 thread's here.

Honestly I think we just need to make sticky threads for all the common derailment topics (Windows 8, Linux, the Office Ribbon, PHP, etc.).

  • Good thing I don't actually need to install it. If I need to use Windows (I don't often fortunately :) ), I still have Windows 7. For my every day computing, I use an OS that wasn't designed by drunk Washingtonians.

There's nothing wrong with PHP or Linux.

Those are the best kind of Washingtonians!

    BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA -- what?

I use both extensively and quite productively and even I can't bring myself to evangelise them to be able to deliver that sentence with a straight face.

You gots to be jokin', right? You've found absolutely nothing wrong with either?

Nah, gu3st is just one of those morons with an irrational hatred of anything Microsoft.

Perfect and flawless don't exist, and thank $deity; the world won't need developers anymore the day the perfect system launches.

Huh. When I saw that in the notification email I thought the forum was fritzing up. But I guess it's not unexpected of Community Server.

  • Looks like those guys updated. Now the programs actually launch. But they've added a "yearly subscription" feature, which is beyond me why they would do that. Funny thing is you can insert the same key after it expires and it'll reactivate. It's still using those four static keys, which I've noticed are actually pirated Windows product keys. Yes, very reputable. In other news, I can't seem to access their ordering form, which would be a good thing, so less people will sink their money into this hole.

Good news!  They've reduced the price to only $24.50.@GMMan said:

Brilliant!!  Why go to all the trouble of generating your own serial numbers.  Let someone else do the work for you.  @GMMan said:

As stupid as this is, it's really not any different than some of the software being sold by "reputable" stores.  Not too long ago I was in a well known office supply store and I noticed that they were selling 3 different programs for copying DVDs.  A quick look at the fine print on the box reveals that none of them will copy "copy protected" DVDs, which is essentially 100% of all commercially produced DVDs (well, movies and TV shows anyway).  And if you have a non-copy protected DVD there's no need for a special program for making copies.

  • @GMMan said:

Because then the user has to pay each year instead of just once, therefore, they get more money. Should be obvious. (Except that no mentally sane person would pay for that program again after having used it for a year, but I don't think the developers grasp the entire concept of how making money works)
